I have a sticky note on my computer that says:
“Focus on the next point.”
It’s a reminder I see every day. As a co-founder of multiple businesses and someone actively involved in several projects, my days are filled with highs and lows. I get yeses, no’s, and maybes. I get progress, setbacks, questions, rejections, breakthroughs—all within a few hours. And in those moments, I have a choice: I can dwell on what didn’t work, or I can refocus on what I know I can do next.
That sticky note? It’s not just motivational. It’s mental training. A practice. A mindset.
I first heard this philosophy from Roger Federer. When asked how he handles mistakes during a match, he said he simply focuses on the next point. That’s it. He doesn’t waste energy replaying the last error in his head—he shifts forward. He knows that winning isn’t about perfection. It’s about being present, consistent, and resilient. You win the match by winning enough points—not all of them.
That idea stuck with me.
I’ve done the work. I’ve put in the hours. I’ve gained the wisdom, the information, and the experience to handle whatever’s in front of me. I’ve conditioned my mind and nervous system to respond with clarity and strength, especially when things get messy.
Because here’s the truth: When you know who you are and you’ve prepared yourself for this moment, your reaction becomes your power. You don’t overanalyze. You don’t spiral. You respond. Automatically. Purposefully. Confidently.
Errors will happen. Disappointments are part of the journey. But staying stuck on the last point doesn’t serve your purpose. When you’ve given it your all, the most powerful thing you can do is refocus your energy and move forward.
So here’s your reminder for today:
Focus on the next point.
That’s where momentum lives.
That’s where growth happens.
